Thermal Application Engineers - Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

POSITION PROFILE:

Exa Corporation seeks Thermal Application Engineers for new technical positions in the area of vehicle thermal simulations. The objective of the position is to develop and validate new simulation methodologies and best practices for thermal applications in ground transportation.

In this role, you will apply your knowledge of thermo-fluid science to develop state-of-the-art solutions relevant to vehicle thermal engineering issues through the use of Exa’s powerful suite of simulation products. Your creativity and ingenuity will have a clear impact on our customers’ efforts to improve vehicle efficiency, safety and passenger comfort on the next generation of vehicles used around the world.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Thermal Application Engineer you will:

 

•Act as a member of the Ground Transportation Applications Group and be responsible for developing new technical solutions of interest to the ground transportation industry which will require the ability to solve challenging fluid dynamic and heat transfer problems.

 

•Work with external and internal customers to identify important thermal issues related to their product design and engineering process.

 

•Define the requirements and the priorities of the new simulation capabilities that are necessary for the identified thermal issues and communicate them clearly to the development team.

 

•Perform validation and verification activities of new thermal features in Exa’s products.

 

•Document the simulation methodologies for a specific thermal application in the form of best practices and guidelines.

 

•Provide technical and marketing support to facilitate the deployment of developed thermal applications.

 

You will report to the Thermal Applications Team Manager and be based in Livonia, Michigan  (alternate location may be considered for an exceptionally qualified candidate). You will collaborate with members of the Thermal Applications Team and other company teams including Development and other Ground Transportation Application Management groups.

 

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

•MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerodynamics, Physics or equivalent.

 

•Experience in thermal modeling of vehicle thermal components and sub-system (HVAC, fans, heat exchangers, exhaust, battery, electric motors, transmission) in the ground transportation industry (3 to 5 years preferred), a strong plus.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

•Strong knowledge of fluid dynamic and heat transfer fundamentals.

 

• Expertise in using commercial CFD and other CAE tools including geometry handling and mesh preparation tools.

 

•UNIX Skills, script programming such as Python, and knowledge of numerical analysis packages such as MATLAB/Simulink a strong plus.

 

•Strong English communication skills and good presentation skills.

 

•Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills including multiple project management.

 

•Self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and a desire of continuous learning.

 

•Ability to apply advanced level technical skills cooperatively in a challenging, fast-paced environment on a team with experienced professionals.

 

•Availability to travel up to 10% domestic and international.
