Systems Modeling Engineer - Thermal & Powertrain Simulation

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Exa Corporation seeks a Systems Modeling Engineer to lead the development and deployment of a new simulation application focused on under-hood cooling during test track drive cycles. This application allows a vehicle maker to predict air, fluid, and component temperatures using a combination of 3D and system models.

 

In this hands-on role, you will be working with automotive, heavy duty vehicle and off-road equipment manufacturers globally. You will support deployment of Exa’s existing solution. You will lead the development of next generation solutions. Your technical expertise will be used to move this solution from supporting simulation of test track behavior to meeting other testing and development needs.

 

You will have the opportunity to develop multi-disciplinary solutions combining systems models  and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This job will provide high visibility and significant growth potential to the right candidate.

 

Exa is seeking a candidate to lead development of transient simulation methodologies for:

  • Cooling package performance;
  • Powertrain induction air flow including the effects of charge air cooling, turbocharging, and EGR;
  • Powertrain performance and efficiency including the effects of induction air;
  • Powertrain fluid warm-up and heat rejection; and
  • HVAC performance.

 

As a Systems Modeling Engineer you will:

  • Work with the leading automotive companies to help solve challenging multi-disciplinary problems related to aerodynamic, powertrain, and thermal management issues.
  • Communicate with customers providing technical support for the developed applications. You will also collaborate with team members and other groups within the company.
  • Learn and become proficient in the use of Exa’s software and other Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools.
  • Candidates with experience in component and vehicle level modeling are encouraged to apply. Candidates with experience in simulation of heat exchangers, combustion, or powertrain modeling are especially encouraged to apply.

 

You will report to the Director of Systems Modeling and Controls and be based in Livonia, Michigan. If you are an ambitious team player with keen technical skills and a desire to continue learning new technologies while working in a fast paced environment, this may be the place for you.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS, MS  or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerodynamics, Physics or equivalent. Software and Chemical Engineering backgrounds will also be considered.
  • Must  have used GT Suite, Simulink, Modelica or similar system tools in a significant project for powertrain, thermal or HVAC analysis. Should be able to create and validate models.
  • Must have experience with automotive, heavy duty vehicle, or off road vehicles. Recent graduates will be considered with research, industry, co-op/intern or student competition experience.
  • Strong written English communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Excellent  problem-solving and a desire for continuous learning.
  • Ability to apply these skills cooperatively in a challenging, fast-paced environment on a team with experienced professionals.
  • Availability to travel up to 10% domestic and international.

 

 

Additional Preferred Skills (strong plus):

  • Experience with multiple system tools like AMESim, Simulink, Flowmaster, Kuli, Modelica, Dymola.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Knowledge of systems related skills such as model identification, model reduction, controls and calibration.
  • Experience using commercial CFD and other CAE tools.
  • UNIX scripting
