President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Remondi co-founded Exa Corporation in 1991 and has held the positions of Chief Executive Officer and President since 1999. Prior to 1999, Mr. Remondi held numerous positions within Exa, including Vice President of Applications Development and Business Development. In that role, Mr. Remondi was responsible for the development of the PowerFLOW product and management of Exa's strategic customer partnerships. Prior to founding Exa, Mr. Remondi held various engineering and engineering management positions at Alliant Computer Systems Corporation and Data General Corporation.
Mr. Remondi has a B.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Tufts University and an M.B.A. from Bentley College.
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Gilbody joined Exa in 2014 and brings over 30 years of finance and operations experience. Most recently he served as Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Board member at Agencyport Software. Prior to that, he held senior finance and operating executive positions at IBM, including Vice President of the Business Analytics Division, and at Cognos Corporation, as President of Cognos Americas and Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations.
Mr. Gilbody holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Business Administration from Boston College.
Hudong Chen, PhD
Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Chen joined Exa in 1993 and has been our Chief Scientist since 1997 and Vice President of Physics since 2000. Prior to his tenure at Exa, Dr. Chen was a visiting assistant physics professor at Dartmouth College and a postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Chen has a Ph.D. in Physics from Dartmouth College, a M.S. in Physics from the College of William and Mary, and a B.S. in Physics from Fudan University in China. Dr. Chen is known for his pioneering work in lattice Boltzmann methods as well as contributions in turbulence and kinetic theory. Dr. Chen has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2000.
Dr. Chen is an adjunct professor at Boston University and was a visiting full professor in 2011 at Harvard University where he taught a course on advanced kinetic theory-based method for fluids.
Senior Vice President, Software Development
Mr. Hoch first joined Exa in 1993 and has been Vice President of Software Development since rejoining the company in 1999. He was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2013. Prior to joining Exa, Mr. Hoch was the lead architect on several research parallel computer systems and related compiler projects at Sandia National Laboratories. Mr. Hoch was also chief architect at Maker Communications, a developer of network communications processors. Mr. Hoch is known for his extensive expertise and achievements in developing computer aided engineering software, as well as parallel computing and compiler technology. He also sits on industrial advisory boards focused on high performance computing.
Mr. Hoch holds both M.S. and B.S. degrees from Purdue University in Computer and Electrical Engineering.
Senior Vice President, Global Aerospace, EU Operations
Mr. Roux joined Exa in 2001 as our managing director for Southern and Western Europe. In April 2003 Mr. Roux assumed the position of Vice President of European Operations. Prior joining to Exa, Mr. Roux was Managing Director of Tecnomatix UK, a provider of product lifecycle management software, and its Scandinavian subsidiary. Mr. Roux has extensive experience selling software solutions to engineers in the manufacturing, electronics, automotive, aerospace and off-highway equipment industries.
Mr. Roux holds a language degree from Catholic University and a business degree from Ecole Superieure de Commerce in Grenoble, France.
Ales Alajbegovic, PhD
Vice President, Ground Transportation Applications
Dr. Alajbegovic first joined Exa in 1996. He rejoined the company in 2005 as the Director of Thermal Management Applications. He became Vice President of Ground Transportation Applications in 2013 after a continuous increase of responsibilities. He was Team Leader for CFD and Multiphase Development at AVL from 1997 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005 he was the Lead Research Scientist at General Dynamics. Dr. Alajbegovic has extensive experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics and development of industrial applications. He currently serves as the Chair of Thermal Management Activities at SAE International.
Dr. Alajbegovic holds the Dipl. Ing. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Ljubljana and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
David Freed, PhD
Vice President, Oil & Gas
Dr. Freed started his tenure at Exa in 1997 with the Physics team, contributing to Exa’s LBM flow physics technology foundation. In 2004, Dr. Freed was appointed to Director, Industrial Consortia, to manage advanced technology development projects with strategic industry partners. In 2006, Dr. Freed took the position of Director, Aeroacoustics Applications, leading the solution development and global deployment of Exa’s aeroacoustics application suite. Dr. Freed was later promoted to Senior Director, Aeroacoustics Applications, then Managing Director, Aeroacoustics and Complex Fluids Applications, and in 2013 was promoted to his current role as Vice President to head up Exa’s Oil and Gas Division.
Dr. Freed holds a B.S. Double in Chemical and Nuclear Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from MIT where he worked under Prof. Kim Molvig, one of Exa’s founders. Dr. Freed is an author on dozens of technical papers on computational aeroacoustics, Lattice Boltzmann physics, and porous media simulation.
Vice President, Asia Sales
Mr. Kazuhito Ishikawa joined Exa in 2005 as a managing director for Japan and was promoted to Vice President of Asia sales in 2013. Mr. Ishikawa started his career in Recruit Co. ltd as a fluid dynamics simulation engineer and then launched CD-Adapco Japan with his colleagues. At CD-Adapco he was responsible for Western Japan sales and eventually lead the entire engineering services team in Japan. Mr. Ishikawa also managed CD-Adapco's IT division and CAE software development & system integration team. Due to these wide ranging responsibilities, he gained extensive experience in the sales and marketing of engineering software, Computational Fluid Dynamics, management of IT, software development and system integration.
Mr. Ishikawa holds a master degree of engineering from Nagoya University in Japan
Swen Nölting, PhD
Vice President, Aerospace
Dr. Nölting joined Exa in 1998 as the sales manager for Central Europe and in 2002 assumed the position of Managing Director of Industrial Consortia. Since 2007 Dr. Nölting has been leading Exa’s aerospace business unit first as Managing Director and since 2013 in the position of Vice President Aerospace with responsibility for business development, sales, and application development for the aerospace industry world-wide. Prior to Exa Corporation, Dr. Nölting was the Managing Director and Co-founder of ICS GmbH and was a research assistant at the Institute for Computation Applications at the University of Stuttgart.
Dr. Nölting holds a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Stuttgart, an M.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona as well as a Vordiplom in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Aachen in Germany.
Vice President Sales DACH+
Mr. Lohwasser joined Exa in 2004. Prior to that, he held management positions in consulting services for the European supply chain industry and automotive OEMs at Tecnomatix Germany (now Siemens PLM), a provider of product lifecycle management and simulation software. Mr. Lohwasser brings far-reaching knowledge in selling and deploying complex, multi-disciplinary engineering solutions in the international manufacturing, automotive and off-highway equipment industries.
Mr. Lohwasser holds a Master of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Tübingen, a Master of Business Administration from Reutlingen University and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Bamberg.
John J. Shields, III has served as a member of our Board of Directors since 1996 and our Chairman since 1999. Mr. Shields has served as a general partner of Boston Capital Ventures since 1997. Prior to assuming that position, Mr. Shields was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Computervision Corporation, a provider of computer-aided design and manufacturing software that was acquired by PTC in 2001. Mr. Shields joined Computervision in January 1990 after 28 years at Digital Equipment Corporation, where his last position was Senior Vice President responsible for sales, services, marketing, and international organizations. Mr. Shields was a member of Digital Equipment Corporation's Executive Committee and Chairman of its Marketing and Sales Strategy Committee.
Dr. John William Poduska has served as a member of our Board of Directors since 1994. Dr. Poduska was the Chairman of Advanced Visual Systems Inc., a provider of visualization software, from January 1992 to December 2001. From December 1989 until December 1991, Dr. Poduska was President and Chief Executive Officer of Stardent Computer Inc., a computer manufacturer. From December 1985 until December 1989, Dr. Poduska served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Stellar Computer Inc., a computer manufacturer he founded (the predecessor of Stardent Computer Inc.). Prior to founding Stellar Computer Inc., Dr. Poduska founded Apollo Computer, Inc. and Prime Computer, Inc. Dr. Poduska also served as a director of Novell, Inc. until 2011, and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. until 2009. Dr. Poduska holds an ScD from MIT and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Lowell University.
Wayne Mackie has served as a member of our Board of Directors since February 2008.
Mr. Mackie is currently the Executive Vice President, Treasurer, and Chief Financial Officer of CRA International, Inc., a publicly traded worldwide economic, financial, and management consulting services firm, a position he has held since2005. Mr. Mackie was a member of the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of Novell, Inc. from 2003 until 2005. From 1972 through December 2002, Mr. Mackie was a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP, where he specialized in software and high technology industry clients. After leaving Arthur Andersen, Mr. Mackie served as a consultant to a number of organizations. Mr. Mackie received a master's degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's degree from Babson College, and is a certified public accountant. Mr. Mackie is currently a trustee and former member of the Board of Directors, Compensation Committee, and Chairman of the Audit Committee for the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Robert Schechter has served as a member of our Board of Directors since June 2008.
Mr. Schechter served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of NMS Communications Corporation from 1995 until his retirement in 2008. From 1987 to 1994, Mr. Schechter held various senior executive positions with Lotus Development Corporation and was a partner of Coopers & Lybrand from 1980 to 1987. Mr. Schechter is currently a director of Parametric Technology Corporation, a provider of product development software solutions. Previously, he had served as a director of Unica Corporation, Soapstone Networks, Inc., Moldflow Corporation, and MapInfo Corporation. Mr. Schechter is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Robert Burke was appointed to Exa's Board of Directors in 2014 with 35 plus years of experience in the technology space including leadership at both private and public companies. Mr. Burke is currently a Venture Partner at Technology Crossover Ventures and has held multiple executive leadership positions including, most recently, the position of CEO of the Art Technology Group (ATG). Under Mr. Burke's tenure, ATG was ranked one of the top five public companies for shareholder value creation and was successfully sold to Oracle for over $1B in 2011. In addition to ATG, Mr. Burke has held executive management positions at Digital Equipment Corporation, ePresence (formally Banyan Systems), and Quidnunc. Mr. Burke holds a BS in Physics from Eastern Michigan University and is currently also on the Boards of Directors for Sitecore A/S and TechTarget, Inc.
